You’re not going to like it, but… some of the worst atrocities are committed by completely ordinary people.
I know that’s not a satisfying answer. It’s much easier to believe that acts of evil come from evil people. But most of the time, they don’t. These are regular people.
They have families. They go to work. They help their neighbours. In every other context, they’re what we’d call normal, functioning, decent members of society.
And yet, some of those same people hold beliefs that are genuinely extreme – sometimes even violent – towards immigrants, towards trans people, towards entire groups of others.
So how does that happen? So many of us get it completely wrong.
And if your understanding of a problem is wrong, everything you do to try and solve it will be wrong too.
