Every year, billions of bananas are sold around the world.
They’re in smoothies, lunchboxes, office kitchens, hotel breakfasts. Just this completely ordinary little fruit with a bright sticker slapped on the side.
But behind that little blue sticker… is one of the darkest corporate histories on Earth.
Massacres. Coups. Death squads. CIA operations. Corporate propaganda. Entire governments reshaped around the needs of a fruit company.
For over a century, Chiquita Brands International – formerly the United Fruit Company – became so powerful that it controlled
Railways,
communications systems,
politicians, and at times
even foreign policy itself across huge parts of Central and South America.
Democratically elected leaders were overthrown. Paramilitaries disappeared entire families. Countries were economically reorganised around… bananas.
behind all of it was a propaganda machine sophisticated enough to survive every scandal.
Because the most effective propaganda doesn’t convince you something evil is good.
It convinces you something enormous is normal.
A smiling mascot. A colourful sticker. A harmless piece of fru it.
How does a company become powerful enough to influence governments, survive massacres, outlive corruption scandals, quietly rebrand itself, and keep operating for over a century… while most people barely even know the story exists?
if something this dark can be hidden inside something as ordinary as a banana… what else have we been taught not to see?
