We’re getting very good at simulating things that used to be human.
Conversation. Emotion. Intimacy. And now… relationships.
Apps like Replika have millions of users who are logging in to talk to something that feels like it cares. Something that remembers them, responds to them, says good morning, asks how their day was.
Even tools like ChatGPT – which were never designed to be romantic – are being shaped into the perfect boyfriend. And when one update made it colder, some users said it felt like their boyfriend had died.
People are forming attachments. Saying “I love you.” Spending hours a day talking. In some cases, building entire emotional worlds around something that isn’t real.
And before I dismissed that as strange, or sad, or just a weird internet trend – I wanted to understand it.
Because if this is where we’re heading…we should probably know why.
